Why you should play Ghost Recon Wildlands

Ghost War League: Why you should play Ghost Recon Wildlands

Ghost Recon is a long-running franchise that spans over 11 different instalments. It lives In the Tom Clancy universe which is famous for the Jack Ryan movies and books. However, with this franchise, instead of following a single character, it follows a tight-knit squad that specializes in tactical operations called, ghosts. This squad is perfectly exemplified in the 10th instalment of the franchise which is the Ghost Recon: Wildlands.

Here at Ghost War League, we love this game so much so that it’s the reason why we started this tournament in the first place and we can’t get enough of it. That’s why in this blog, we’re going to list down the reasons why we think everyone should play this amazing game. If you’re curious to learn more about this four-year-old open-world shooter, here’s everything you need to know:

The open-world

Ghost Recon: Wildlands marks the first game of the franchise to move over to an open-world setting. In this title, players are thrown into a fictional depiction of the country of Bolivia and once the game begins, they’re given full freedom to explore the massive map.

The great thing about this open-world is that it feels lived in. Each town has its personality and different NPCs go on with their everyday lives. You can expect this level of detail in the entire map of the game.

Even though it’s massive in size, it’s filled with different activities and random encounters that helps keep the player immersed and interested in the game. This gives the game more longevity and allows players to fully experience the world like they’re there in person.

Also, what makes this version of Bolivia so fun to explore is the freedom that it gives the players. Whether they want to jump from building to building in one of its narrow streets or swim at the lake of the swamp side of town, everything is up to the player.

Speaking of lakes and towns, Ghost Recon: Wildlands’ Bolivia is also composed of different terrains that make it all the more interesting to explore. This open-world designed by Ubisoft consists of sprawling deserts, lush jungles, vast mountain ranges, lakes and more. That’s not counting the various cities and districts that make up the different bases of the enemy territory.

The selection of vehicles

Because Bolivia is such a massive map, the players would have to be equipped with a vehicle to get around efficiently with their squad. Luckily, Ghost Recon: Wildlands doesn’t fall short on its selection of modes of transportation as it has a total of over 60 different vehicles for the players to choose from. These range from boats, cars, trucks helicopters and more.

This makes travelling in the game that much easier and exciting at the same time. Even though there’s a fast travel option in the game where you can just magically teleport your entire squad, you’ll find yourself choosing to travel manually because of how satisfying it is.

Each vehicle controls differently and all of them provide a specific purpose. For example, some vehicles may be good for off roads while some aren’t they can also depend on the weather as some cars perform better in wet terrain and under harsh conditions.

The game also does a great job of forcing players to find alternate routes towards their waypoint. Usually, the route won’t be that easy and players would have to find alternate vehicles and ways to proceed with their mission.

A great example that we encountered in the game was when the ghost squad needed to ride a helicopter to ascend a massive mountain. Once there, some conveniently placed dirt bikes are parked that we eventually used to descend the mountain after the mission.

The result is a wild ride down a steep mountain filled with obstacles. The trees, boulders and different debris only added more thrill to the already thrilling experience. It’s the little things like this that makes the players feel freer and more in control of the game.

Customization

One of the things that new players will instantly notice with Ghost Recon: Wildlands is the deep customization system available in almost every aspect of the game. This freedom helps the payers add a more personal experience to their gameplay and overall improves the game as well.

Character customization

This is shown at the beginning of the game where you’re given full freedom of how your character will look like. From the gender to skin colour down to the hair of your character, everything is customizable and you can also change this whenever you want throughout the game.

You can also change their clothes which is a great option to have considering the different weather conditions that hit Bolivia. To add more realism to your gameplay, you can add more layers to your characters when you’re in colder plains while you can strip them down to a simple shirt when it starts to get warm.

It doesn’t affect your gameplay or anything but it’s just nice to have an option like that. Aside from utility, you can also add accessories such as shades and hats to make yourself look cooler. It also adds more personality to your character knowing that you’ve designed how they look in the first place.

You can also use this customization to your advantage if you’re planning to camouflage to your surroundings. Trying to infiltrate at night? Wear an all-black outfit. Entering a high-tech base located in the snowy alps? Change to an all-white and layered outfit.

Gun customization

After creating your character, you can then choose a loadout for them. From here, you’ll be taken to a weapon customization menu that may seem complicated at first but once you get used to it, you’ll easily navigate your way around it.

What’s great about this customization is that you can tweak your character’s loadout based on the way you play the game. If you’re someone who approaches an enemy outpost silently then you can equip your weapons with silencers to aid for a quieter approach.

On the other hand, if you’re someone who likes to enter every situation with a gunshot, then you can equip yourself with powerful weapons such as shotguns and assault rifles.

Ghost Recon: Wildlands features a comprehensive weapon customization system where you can modify your guns to your liking. You can attach scopes that let you aim farther or you can equip a stock to increase your gun’s mobility, the possibilities are endless!

On top of that, you can also customize the colours of all your weapons and change the way how they look just like with your character’s clothing. You can also add patterns, stickers and badges to your guns to add more personality to them.

The freedom

As we’ve mentioned earlier, players are given full freedom on how they want to approach every situation. This makes every encounter different from each other which adds to the game’s longevity meaning that the players won’t get tired easily of repetitive gameplay.

You can either choose to infiltrate enemy bases with a strategy or go in directly and kick their front door open. However, we would recommend the former as creating a plan is part of what makes this game fun and seeing that plan come into fruition is extremely satisfying.

The game also provides you with different types of equipment to carry on with your strategy such as drones to scout your surroundings, binoculars to see enemies from afar, night vision goggles to see during the night and many more.

Speaking of night, the game also allows you to choose which time of the day you would want to start your infiltration. Each time of day provides a benefit of thor own with the night being the best option for stealth while the day helps you blend in with civilians.

The teamwork

One of the core pillars of Ghost Recon: Wildlands is teamwork. From the get-go, this trait is immediately emphasized with the introduction of your squad, the titular Ghosts. Together, your goal is to take down the factions that are ruling the fictional depiction of Bolivia.

However, it’s easier said than done as you can’t just enter every gunfight guns-blazing. Not only will you have a higher chance of getting killed but it takes away the fun of teamwork. By choosing your moves correctly and assigning your team members to specific roles, your approach will turn out much smoother and more successful.

The game also introduces a synchronized shot system where you can tag your targets before shooting them in one go with your teammates. This lets you kill your targets one by one as well as eliminate witnesses in the process. If you’re someone who doesn’t want to leave traces behind, this is an essential skill that you have to learn in the game.
